Last Monday, my boss came to our office and asked that we role play in handling objections.
There is something called the 90/10 rule. It states that in a sales call, the customer or client should speak 90% and the sales rep should speak 10% of the time.
When it came to my turn, after I spoke, he asked my colleague to write on a piece of paper 90/10. He then took that piece of paper, squeezed it, threw it on the floor, and as he was about to step and crush it, I closed my eyes.
After the meeting, I walked to my cube shocked and bothered to start making the calls. Shortly afterwards, he returned, picked up the piece of paper from the floor, came to my cube and gave it to me.
"Victoria this is yours, keep it safe" he said
What was the meaning of all that? What point was he trying to make? What did he mean? These questions and many more haunted me. And while I will never know their answers, the truth is, my feelings were hurt.

I am new to sales, It's been slightly over a month since I started this new job. August 23rd to be precise. And in September the first month, out of the 5 new sales reps I produced the most revenue almost double what others did. In fact the same colleague who wrote the 90/10 told me, my revenue alone paid for every one in the sales team salary. Not to mention I am the only lady in the group of seven men.
What would you have done?
Would you have told the boss how he made you feel and risk losing your job?
I knew that what my boss had done was mean, pure meanness. What I did not know and will never know is why or what caused him to act that way towards me.
I had a choice to address the incident. Tell him how his actions had affected me or say nothing, pretend that everything is fine and focus on my work.
I chose to keep quiet and the pain lasted longer than usual. I have tried to think about what I am to learn, nothing is coming up. I have tried to make sense of it all. Nothing adds up. I have forgiven the incident and is moving on hoping to maintain a positive attitude and never to say anything about it to him.
It's another Monday.
Are Monday Blues real or a myth?
Be mindful of how you feel on Mondays and try not to bleed on people who did not hurt you. And should you ever find yourself in a situation where you can not express yourself but yet you have to deal with the pain alone; here are three things to consider.
- Call a trusted friend and tell them about it.
- Move your body; do yoga, gym or run.
- Adopt an attitude of gratitude.
Despite my boss acting in a way that did not sit well with me, I have a job and because of it I am able to provide for myself. For this reason I am grateful for my job and to him, especially during this time of my transition and when so many people are not employed.
